Exploring Different Types of Tires for Your Volkswagen

Maybe you’ve realized your Volkswagen needs new tires. Or maybe you just purchased a new or used VW, and you want to understand what type of tires your car has and how to care for them. Whatever the case, don’t worry. There are many different types of tires out there, but they’re easy to understand. We’ll go over the types that your Volkswagen car or SUV is most likely to need and use. 

Tire Types Your VW Likely Uses 

Of all the kinds of tires you might encounter, you’re not likely to ever need to put competition tires, track tires, all-terrain tires, or mud tires on your Volkswagen, so we won’t be covering them here. However, there are still plenty of tire types to choose from, including the following: 

All-Season Tires 

These tires are designed to do well in dry and wet conditions and hot and cold weather. However, they don’t do extremely well in severe weather conditions, like the hurricane weather we get in Florida. But they are the most common type of tire used on cars, trucks, and SUVs in the U.S., so it’s clearly both flexible and durable and works well for many types of vehicles. 

Run-Flat Tires

Run-flat tires are meant to survive being punctured, so your car can drive on them for a little while without needing an immediate replacement. This type of tire can survive punctures because it has either a support ring with hard rubber on its interior or a self-supporting system with reinforced sidewall construction. Run-flat tires prevent you from having to change a tire on the side of a highway or another exposed location. Instead, you can drive to your nearest service center and have it replaced. 

Summer Tires 

These are great tires for Florida weather. Why? They have an increased grip that helps them survive hydroplaning and respond quickly on wet roads, making them a good fit for Florida’s warm, wet weather. That’s because summer tires like the siping or small slits in their treads. They’re an excellent choice if you only want to spend time in warm-weather regions like Florida and other southern states. 

Touring Tires 

These tires work best for sedans and sporty cars that need more handling and traction because they have an asymmetrical tread pattern. They’re great for strong performances, but they make you feel the road more when you drive on them than the other types of tires do. They work in just about any season and weather. 

Winter/Snow Tires 

These tires are designed to help you drive through snowy and icy conditions safely.  They have channels and grooves carved into them to increase their grip on ice and snow. They’re also generally most necessary in areas where it regularly gets below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. While winter tires may not seem necessary in Florida, they’re still good to know about. After all, you could travel or move out of state to an area with harsher winters, and it’s always good to be prepared.
